 Latitude line is an important line drawn on the globe or map.  It is drawn from west to east on the globe or map.  From this line the "North-South" position of any place on the earth is known.  This line helps to find the difference in duration of day and night between any two places.  This line makes it easy to understand the climate.  In this post we are going to see what latitude is.

 Definition of Latitude Line

 Latitude is the measure of the angular distance between a given point on the surface north or south of the equator and the center of the earth.  Generally, the line joining the latitudes is called the latitude line.  In simple language, the line or circle drawn parallel to the equator from west to east on the globe or map is called latitude line.

 Characteristics of Latitude Line

 • All these lines are drawn in the form of circles.

 • These circles are perpendicular to the Earth's axis and its center is located on the Earth's axis.

 • The equator divides the Earth into two equal parts.  This is the latitude line of 0°.  Therefore other latitude lines are calculated with reference to the equator only.  Latitude lines can be drawn up to 90° North and 90° South respectively to the north and south of the equator.  The latitude lines which are north of the equator are called 'northern latitude lines' and the latitude lines which are south of the equator are called 'southern latitude lines'.

 • The length of all other latitude lines is less than the length of the equator.  That's why they are also called small circles.  In fact, as we move from the equator to the pole, the length of the lines of latitude decreases continuously.  The length of the equator is about 40 thousand kilometers.  Whereas the pole is just a point and its length is zero.

 • Since the equator is the longest of all latitudes, it is called the Great Circle or Great Circle.

 • If both poles are not considered as lines because they are points, then the total number of lines of latitude will be 179 {89 (northern latitude line) +89 (north latitude line) + equator}.  If the equator is also not included in this, then the number of absolute latitude lines can be said to be 180 or 178.

 The number of latitude lines is 181.  If the two poles are not considered to be lines then its number is 179 because these are points.  The angular distance of a place from the equator to the north and south is called the latitude of that place.  The line joining places having the same angular distance is called Latitude.  There are 90° latitude from the equator to the poles (90°-90° towards both poles).  As we move from the equator to the poles, the value of the line of latitude will increase.  If we go north from the equator, we will write the latitudinal value of that place in (°N) and going south in (°S).  All latitude lines are parallel and the distance between two latitudes is about 111 km.
