What was the treaty of Purandar
The Treaty of Purandar was signed in March 1776 between the Marathas and the East India Company. War broke out between the Company and the Marathas as a result of the Treaty of Surat of 1775 AD between the 'Bombay Sarkar' and Raghova, who considered himself Peshwa. sent for talks. Through the Treaty of Purandar, the British agreed to leave Raghoba on the condition that they would be allowed to keep Sashti under their control. The 'Court of Directors' rejected this treaty and as a result, war broke out again with the Marathas. This war continued till 1782 AD and ended only by the treaty of Salbai. The British accepted all the terms of the Treaty of Purandar at Salbai and made a kind of reconciliation with the Marathas.
The two agreed on the terms of the treaty and the "Treaty of Purandar" was concluded on 22 June 1665.
According to the terms of the treaty:-
Shivaji was to give his 23 forts to the Mughals, whose income was 4 lakh huns per year.
Shivaji had to keep 12 forts with a normal income (about one lakh huns annually).
Shivaji agreed to send his son Shambaji to the service of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
In the Mughal court, it was accepted to give a mansab of 5000 and a suitable jagir to Shambhaji.
Shivaji had to assist the Mughal army during the military campaign on Bijapur by the Mughal army.
In return, he would have been given the jagirs of Konkan and Balaghat, for which Shivaji had to pay 40 lakh huns to the Mughal court.
On March 9, 1668, again between Shivaji and the Mughals, with the mediation of Jaswant Singh.
After this treaty, Aurangzeb presented a farman and a Khalat to Shivaji.
Thus Shivaji was given the jagir of Berar and his son Shambhaji was again given his mansab (5000).
Violation of Treaty of Purandar :-
In 1670 Shivaji, in violation of the Treaty of Purandar, conquered most of the 23 kilos given to the Mughals. Of these, the fort of Kundan was the most important. Tanaji Malusare died while conquering this fort.
Shivaji changed the name of this fort to Sinhagad in February 1670, after which Shivaji attacked Surat for the second time in October 1670 and looted it badly. And started taking Sardeshmukhi, he declared that Maharashtra belonged to him and not to the Mughals.
In 1672, Shivaji also snatched Panhala fort from Bijapur, in which Annaji Datto played a very important role, which is also known as Shivaji's Todarmal.
